We have visited The Malt House twice before, once in 2023 when it was still “The Goat” and once in 2024 when it had changed name but the food was still great. However, I have no idea what has happened since because this was one of the most disappointing roasts we’ve ever had. The atmosphere was completely rubbish - you expect a good pub to be heaving on a Sunday but there was one other table in there when we arrived and they were playing the strangest music. Then the staff seemed like they couldn’t care less - no smiles or anything and when they sat us down, didn’t say much and didn’t offer to get us a drink to start. The food came after about 5 mins after ordering (which I always see as a red flag) and the meat was just not appetising at all. I had the pork roast, my partner had the mixed roast and both of us didn’t enjoy the meat. My pork looked pink in places and was just full of squidgy fat so I left most of it. The rest of the roast was fine, but bland, and we were disappointed to see they’ve changed the gravy from the memorable Goat gravy which used to be full of flavour. The other negative was that we asked for 1 portion of pigs in blankets which the menu said was 2 pigs in blankets. When they bought the food out, the portion was on 1 plate but had 4 pigs in blankets, so we assumed the menu was wrong. However we then got charged for 2 portions of pigs in blankets which we hadn’t asked for. Not only that, the pigs in blankets were anaemic and the bacon was also pure fat. Not appetising at all, and when we told the waitress that the pigs in blankets were awful, she didn’t even offer to take them off the bill for us, despite us only eating 1. We were in there for a grand total of 35 minutes, so overall, not a great experience. I’d give it a 2.5 but won’t be going back again to what was once our favourite pub for a roast!

We ate here tonight and left very disappointed, advertised as a family friendly place but they weren’t happy that I brought my 9mo baby in his pushchair. Apparently when I booked they were supposed to tell me there was no room for pushchairs but no one said anything and I clearly stated I was bringing a baby. Then I ordered the chicken parm, my partner ordered steak. My chicken was gross, I cut into it and noticed the inside was pink in areas and the texture was slimey and rubbery. So the waitress took it to the kitchen and the chef confirmed it was cooked properly, so I took a bite and the texture made me feel sick. They offered to remake it for me which I was appreciative about, however the second one came out even worse! Some parts I couldn’t even cut as it was hard in some areas and then really wet and slimey in others! My partners steak wasn’t anything special either. I asked for the bill, I explained that I’d happily pay for the chips i ate and everything else but please could they not charge me for the chicken parm as it was inedible. She said she’d have to get her manager, that was fine. Except no one knew where she was so we were sat waiting and in the end we paid for the whole bill but both left feeling very dissatisfied. The waitress was very apologetic but also stated how this is a popular dish and no one else has had a problem, which made it seem like I was lying. But my partner wouldn’t even try it to see if I was being picky as he said it looked gross and he didn’t want to risk getting sick! Unfortunately I only took a picture of the first chicken and even then the camera doesn’t show how bad it was, the second one was even worse! Can’t believe I paid almost £20 for some squidgy pink chicken, I would have been better off going to a weatherspoons, the food would have been better and cheaper!

Visited 11 October for my mums 60th birthday and had a very enjoyable meal. The staff had very kindly decorated the table. We ate in the bar area rather than the restaurant as we had a dog with us and were very happy they could accommodate us. The dog was very spoilt and we felt very welcome with her. When the under 5’a got restless one of the gentlemen pointed out where they could play some games. Delightful food and great service, thank you

The Malthouse: Living Up to the "Gastro" Promise My initial draw to The Malthouse was right there in its name: "Gastro Pub." As an avid explorer of pubs, the confident declaration of "Gastro" immediately piqued my interest. It's a bold claim, a responsibility that sets high expectations. However, I'm delighted to report that The Malthouse not only meets this challenge but truly embraces it. From the moment we stepped inside, the atmosphere was fantastic, a perfect blend of traditional pub charm and a more refined dining experience. The subtle background music and comfortable seating added to the relaxed and enjoyable ambiance. The staff were exceptional, attentive and genuinely helpful throughout our visit, making us feel completely at ease. But let's talk about the "Gastro" aspect, the heart of the matter. The Malthouse truly shines in its culinary offerings. The Steak Ale Pie was nothing short of exquisite. The tender pieces of steak simply melted in the mouth, a testament to the quality of the meat and its careful preparation. The flavour of the pie was rich and deeply satisfying, perfectly seasoned to enhance the natural taste of the ingredients. And the pastry? Absolutely perfect – a delightful texture that complemented the hearty filling beautifully. Then there was the Steak Sandwich, a dish that unexpectedly transported me back to my childhood. It possessed that unmistakable homemade taste, a comforting familiarity that spoke volumes about the care and quality put into its creation. Overall, The Malthouse is a true gem. It lives up to its "Gastro" moniker with exceptional food, a wonderful atmosphere, and outstanding service. If you're looking for a pub experience elevated by truly delicious, thoughtfully prepared dishes, The Malthouse is an absolute must-visit. I wholeheartedly recommend it and look forward to returning soon.

Brilliant food, great service! Reasonably priced with good sized portions, the food came quickly and all together. Veggy curry was lush, and the pie of the day was really good too. They also had live music which was a really nice addition.

The service was amazing and very friendly. The food tasted lovely, my only issue was I think the veg portion was quite a bit smaller than other local places for roasts, only one of my potato’s were crispy, and not much gravy is served- although you can ask for more for the table. But, that’s my only negative! The sticky toffee pudding was also delicious.

This place is beautifully styled, and the food was lovely. The atmosphere was fresh, bright, and relaxed. Even the restrooms were spotless and well-designed. The dishes were served with great care, and the chef did an excellent job with each one. This place is worth visiting, and I'm happy we chose it.

Walk in on a Sunday and was accommodated very easily. Sunday roast was lovely (it is not often my husband clears his plate - but he did here) staff are very polite and professional. Will definitely be back for goatfest
